Turn Your Tomorrow into Today!

Have you ever told yourself you are going to start working out, but keep putting it off until “tomorrow”?

You’re not alone.  For some lucky people, actual physical training is the hardest part of working out and staying fit. For numerous others, it’s more difficult to get out the door and get to the gym.  Excuses pile up, and suddenly three months have passed with no progress!  Each day you say “tomorrow”, it becomes harder and harder to keep yourself accountable. So, how can we turn our tomorrow into today?

One reason why you may be struggling to get started is because you are thinking too big. Not everyone needs to start training for a marathon straight from the beginning. Even professional runners start with shorter 5K races and move up to longer distances. Start small and work your way up! Commit to something that you know you can do, and then see where you can take it from there.  It’s easy to get intimidated when we think we have to go from 0 to 60 mph immediately. Ask yourself, “What small thing can I do today to improve my fitness?”

Don’t know where to start? Find yourself some inspiration. Today, we are lucky to have access to a world of information on the internet and through social media sources. Read as much as you can. There are thousands if not millions of fitness blogs, websites, and social media accounts that detail how they began their fitness journey and how you can too. Find out what is important to you. Do you want to lose weight? Gain strength? Fit into that old pair of jeans that you’ve been saving? There is information on all these subjects online. Look around, find what inspires you, and then ask yourself, “What’s something they did that I can do today?”

Are you not starting today because you are afraid to go at it alone? Enlist the help of your friends or find a group fitness class in your area.  Being with a group or sharing your progress with your friends and family publicly commits you to a fitness routine and helps keep you accountable. Working out is more fun when you have others around to share the experience with!

Now, give yourself some motivation. Have you been wanting to get a massage or try that new restaurant that opened up in town? Make that your reward and stick to it. Only go to that restaurant or get the massage if you do exactly what you set out to do.  Start out with smaller, more frequent rewards at the beginning to keep yourself going, and then start to spread them out and make the rewards better as you make progress! What’s a motivational reward you can set up for yourself today?

This week at Varsity is the last week to sign up for our Adult Fit 90 Day Challenge. It’s an amazing way to just begin working or continue pushing the limits on your fitness in a small group environment.   There are classes six days a week with multiple classes a day, so you have numerous opportunities to start “today”!
