Important Tips to Cheering on Game Day

Game Day is the best time to see cheerleaders in their element. Cheerleaders are building stunts, tumbling, yelling cheers and sidelines to pump up the crowd. While on the sidelines, a cheerleader’s job is to keep the crowd involved in the game and to cheer the players on. The more energy the cheerleaders can draw from the crowd, the more motivated the players are to win!

In a crowed stadium with thousands of people screaming, shouting and, of course, cheering, it is important for the cheerleaders to use these tips to keep the crowd involved.

Use your Diaphragm during every Cheer or Sideline

As you are pumping up the crowd, you want to make sure you are just as loud at the beginning ofthe game as you are at the end. To help you not lose your voice on game day, make sure to use your diaphragm. Your diaphragm helps project your voice without harming your throat. To test if you are using your diaphragm when you cheer, place your hand on your abdomen, right below your lungs. This is where your diaphragm is located. As you say the words of your cheer, you should feelyour diaphragm move with every word. You can cheer for hours on end by using your diaphragm.

Sharp Motions Every Time

All cheers and sidelines have motions to them. It is important for every motion to be sharp and have correct placement. On game day, all of the cheerleaders should look the same on the sideline. If your arms are loose, you will be late hitting your motions, and you will stick out. You want to make sure you are sharp to lead the crowd, and are not taking away attention from the game by half way performing.

Solid Skills Every time

During practice, your stunt group may have just learned a new cool stunt, but it is not hitting 100% of the time. Game day is not the time to practice this new skill. It is important on game day to perform skills you know you will hit every time you attempt them. Again, a cheerleader’s job is to lead the crowd, not to be adistraction. Keep the stunts simple and solid so you can focus on pumping up the crowd.

Use these tips on game day for a great, crowd effective performance. These tips also apply to cheerleading routines. The tighter your motions, louder your words and solid your skills are, the more the crowd will enjoy watching your performance!
